How long does the MP-eye test take?
On average it takes about 50 seconds, with a range of between 20-180 seconds.
Are glasses/contact lenses worn for the test?
Correction of visual acuity is not necessary for the test. Glasses should be removed as the lenses can alter the polarisation used by the MP-eye, however, contact lenses do not need to be removed as they do not interfere with the test, unless they are tinted or photochromic.
What actions should we recommend to someone that scores low on the MP-eye?
People with low macular pigment density can protect their eyes by wearing sunglasses or photochromics regularly even on overcast/cloudy days, wearing a wide brimmed hat, and adding blue light filtering to their prescription glasses. They can improve their natural protection by eating a broad diet of dark green and brightly coloured fruits and vegetables and considering macular pigment supplements, and they can reduce further damage by not smoking, losing weight and staying fit.
Should I test all patients?
Yes. Understanding your natural protection against damaging light is helpful for people of all ages. The earlier a person starts protecting their eyes the less likely they will be to lose sight later in life. That said, some patients with vision impairment may find the test difficult e.g. severe cataracts or existing macular dysfunction.

Everyone knows they should eat well, and protect their eyes, but research shows that giving someone a quantitative assessment combined with clear advice improves their likelihood of making positive lifestyle changes and buying products to improve and protect their eye-health.
